In 1989, we first got in touch with The Poe Sisters through
our old friend Howard Vokes. Then, the names and music of Nelle and
Ruth Poe was completely unknown to us. The reason was, they never cut a
record. The duo appeared on Roy Acuff's segment of THE GRAND OLE OPRY
in the mid 1940s. During these years a number of air checks were cut in
Nashville on lacquer discs. These sensitive discs survived until they
were mailed to us for restoration. Ten wonderful items were salvaged.
Nelle - who did all of the correspondence - was amazed with what these old
items sounded like after the restoration procedure and commented: "A
miracle happened". It was a great pleasure to work with these sweet old
ladies who kept in touch until 2004. Both are no longer alive. One may
wonder why they never made it. Raising a family was probably more
important to them. With Nelle on guitar and Ruth on mandolin and close
harmony singing they could have been "The female Blue Sky Boys". See
